SXSWi: Instructional Online Video: The Next Big Thing
This panel interested me because I deal with many training applications at work. The current trend towards distributed learning is going to make online instructional video even more relevant. I’m sure this panel will focus more on mainstream video, but many aspects should translate well.
Panelists:
- Jan Kabili, PhotoshopOnline.TV
- Alex Lindsay, Pixel Corps
Notes:
- Expert Village: How to’s about anything
- DIY video podcasts (MAKE magazine)
- Get a video camera and video tape it
- Can use a video camera to record on screen, too.
- Not just a screen grab, shows the people
- Distribution:
- Host video on someplace like Brightcove, Blip.tv, etc. Share revenues
- Lynda.com movie training library. Get royalties, treat you like an author
- Alex’s types of training:
- dvGarage
- MacBreak
- 26 shows in production or pre-production
- Most popular Macbreak’s are where he draws over a still in Photoshop with his pen tool
- People want to watch things when they are shorter
- Can listen for hour, hour and a half
- 2-8 minute pieces for video
- Starting to efficiently automate graphics
- Live importing from FileMaker database
- Example of watching a movie with embedded links
- Click on his shirt, sends you to Ralph Lauren
- Flash Player that sits on top of QuickTime
- The game you can play that they (TV) can’t play is interactivity
- ABC will cancel a show if it is less than 5 million viewers
- Key Points
- Short Segments (2–15) minutes
- Be clear
- Be entertaining
- Outlets
- OnNetworks
- Pondango
- iTunes/AppleTV/Sony (PS3)/Microsoft (XBox), Zudeo, Joost
- ATT, Comcast, Verizon
I was a little worried about how this started (seemed WAY too general about the types of content you can cover in video), but Alex did a god job of showing some interesting techniques. Extremely short panel… this 25 minute time slot is tough.
